Do you know its history, no neither did we!
It started in America right?
Wrong….
Halloween started with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain in Ireland, Scotland, and England, which celebrated the end of summer and the harvest.
The Celts believed this was a time when the veil between the living and the dead thinned, allowing spirits to return to Earth.
Our modern celebrations evolved from this pagan festival with influences from the Catholic Church’s observances of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, and its traditions were carried to America by immigrants.
Ancient Celtic Roots
The festival of Samhain was a major Celtic celebration around November 1st to mark the end of summer and the start of winter.
Spirit World
The Celts believed that on this night, the boundary between the world of the living and the spirit world became blurred, allowing ghosts of the dead to return.
Celebrations
People built large bonfires, wore costumes made of animal skins, and celebrated the harvest.
Christian Influence
The Catholic Church later adopted and adapted some of these traditions.
- All Saints’ Day: In the 8th and 9th centuries, the Church placed All Saints’ Day on November 1st.
- All Souls’ Day: All Souls’ Day was established for November 2nd, and the evening before, “All Hallows’ Eve,” became the name for Halloween.
Modern Evolution
The holiday later spread to other parts of the world, particularly North America.
Immigrants
Irish and Scottish immigrants brought their Halloween traditions to America. Hence why we thought it was originally and American holiday!
- Why pumpkins: We carve pumpkins for Halloween to ward off evil spirits, a tradition that originated in Ireland with the legend of Stingy Jack. Irish immigrants originally carved faces into turnips and potatoes to scare away Jack’s wandering soul, but they switched to pumpkins in America because they were more readily available and larger. The practice of carving them and calling them “jack-o’-lanterns” became a popular Halloween tradition
These days we dress up and celebrate the day with parties, trick or treating and pumpkin picking and carving. Unbeknownst to most, where the tradition originated and why it began.
How fascinating!
